Nissan and Honda chiefs clash over US recession

Nissan and Honda have entered a war of words over whether America has plunged into recession.

The split between the chiefs of two of the world's largest carmakers coincided with a warning from analysts that an unexploded bomb beneath US car loans will "inevitably" blow up and could become the next funding crisis to hit global markets.

Carmakers in Japan and the US have used increasingly aggressive financing techniques to shift vehicles, creating what many observers believe is a mountain of credit with significant risks of defaults.

In Tokyo today, Takeo Fukui, president of Honda, appeared bullish on the prospects for car sales in the US, stating: "I don’t foresee a recession. There are plenty of business opportunities."

Historians Fear MLK’s Legacy Being Lost

Hillary Rodham Clinton came under fire when she was quoted as saying King's dream of racial equality was realized only when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

King has "slipped into the realm of symbol that people use and manipulate for their own purposes," McNair said.

Harris-Lacewell said that is something people need to push back against.

"It's not OK to slip into flat memory of who Dr. King was, it does no justice to us and makes him to easy to appropriate," she said. "Every time he gets appropriated, we have to come out and say that's not OK. We do have the ability to speak back."

Explorers piling up bills, businesses say

Local businesses say the Great Falls Explorers professional basketball team and team owner Michael Tuckman of Seattle are racking up more than points this season. They say Tuckman has between $40,000 and $50,000 in outstanding bills.

Tuckman said Monday night that he has outstanding bills with two Great Falls hotels but denied any responsibility for the other expenses, saying they were accrued prior to his taking ownership of the Explorers on Nov. 24 from Apex Sportstainment.

Here's An Idea: Give Away 1-Gig iPod Shuffle

Colleague Peter Coy floated an interesting idea my way this morning in the wake of Apple's price cut on the low-end iPod shuffle to $49. Why not give them away? His thinking was simple: Giving away the low-end version would get new consumers to the iPod platform, and get them interested in perhaps buying a higher-end model, say a nano or an iPod touch fairly soon after. Additionally, it would boost sales of iTunes songs.

It seemed like an interesting idea, at first but as I ran through the scenario, it would be a money-loser up front. Remember that the average iPod owner buys only 22 songs on iTunes, and while Apple doesn't disclose how much it makes as profit on each song, the iTunes Store operates on a pretty thin margin. If you assume that Apple books between 25 and 30 cents on a 99-cent song download, then you're probably pretty close to the mark.

Spending detox worth every penny saved

I loved blogging daily at MiamiHerald.com/business (The Frugalista Files) about my experience in spending detox. There were ups (realizing that I had leftover cash after paying both my rent and light bill in a single pay period) and downs (staying home Valentine's Day with no plans).

But over all, this has been one of the best experiences of my life. After doing the no-buy month, I realized that I spent way too much and, more importantly, I could change my situation. Like me, many young consumers have a spending problem.

According to cardtrak.com, the average credit-card debt per household with a card is $9,659. Many college students graduate with an average of $20,000 in student loan debt. I have both a credit card balance and a student loan to pay off. I want them gone, sooner rather than later.

Song choice hurts the ladies on ‘Idol’

Once again, Malloy was charming on her introductory video, and after she sang. But while she's proven she can imitate Britney Spears, she had a harder time channeling Heart's Ann Wilson on “Magic Man."

“It's a hard thing to give you constructive advice at the moment except that you've just got to find the right song," Simon said. But since this is her second week in a row with a less than impressive effort, she may not get that chance.

Syesha Mercado was one of the judges' favorites a week ago, and hoped to impress them again when she turned around Billy Paul's “Me and Mrs. Jones" by switching the genders in the song. However, the judges didn't think the pronoun shift made it an appropriate song choice.

“That wasn't what you got … it was just a little taste of what you got," Randy said.
