HSBC banks £12.2 billion profit

Banking giant HSBC has seen profits rise 10 per cent to £12.2 billion despite having to write off £8.7 billion from bad debts and investments linked to the credit crunch.

The UK's largest banking business said it was "continuing to face challenges" in North America as a result of the housing market troubles and associated credit crunch.

HSBC also warned that the credit outlook in the US may "get worse before it gets better".

HSBC said overall performance during 2007 was bolstered by "exceptionally strong" results in the emerging market regions of Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East.

In the UK, profits from commercial banking topped the £1 billion mark for the first time.

But the group's US consumer business - comprising mortgages, credit cards and personal loans - suffered from high bad debt charges, with write-offs in this area increasing 80 per during 2007 to £5.9 billion.

Close Ask Planet Gossip

Here's what happens: During the episode, Supermodel contestant Perry Ullmann (above) gets a call from his live-in girlfriend, Amanda Pagel.

This week, the National Enquirer ran a story claiming that Pagel might have been the other woman in Spears' relationship with Adnan Ghalib.

"You need to listen to me," Pagel tells Ullmann. "There is a huge story about me that has blown up in the media, and I just want you to know that it’s not true and that you heard it from me first. Unfortunately, you will be affected by this."

Pagel refuses to give any more details, which leads Ullmann to ask, "Is something going on?"

"I’m thinking about you and I’ll talk to you soon," Pagel says before hanging up.

Poor guy. He calls her back and leaves a message.

NASCAR UAW-DODGE 400: Not all can afford lap of luxury Thirteen Cup ...

NASCAR Cup drivers will go all out today in qualifying, even though no pole sitter in the series' first 10 visits to Las Vegas Motor Speedway has won the race.

But the bigger drama on opening day of the UAW-Dodge 400 will be which of the 13 drivers without guaranteed spots can crack the 43-car field.

Among those 13 who will fight for six or seven openings are Dale Jarrett, Las Vegan Patrick Carpentier and Toyota drivers Brian Vickers, David Reutimann and Michael Waltrip. This will be Jarrett's last Las Vegas stop before he retires.

The top 35 drivers in car owners points are locked into starting spots for Sprint Cup races, but in the first five races of the year -- Las Vegas is the third -- the 35 guaranteed spots are determined by last year's final owners standings.

On Native Ground

DUMMERSTON, Vt. -- Entergy, the energy conglomerate that owns of Vermont Yankee, the nuclear power plant that sits about a dozen miles from my doorstep, has launched an advertising blitz touting nuclear power as being "green."

The ad campaign was timed to coincide with the start of the Vermont Legislature's 2007-08 session. Lawmakers are currently discussing the effects of climate change on Vermont and what can be done to reduce the production of carbon dioxide and other gases that contribute to global warming.
'According to a study at MIT, it would take 300 new nuclear reactors here and 1,500 worldwide to have a real impact on greenhouse gasses. That means building a new one every six months for 60 years... .'

The nuclear power industry has jumped into the climate change debate and is touting nuclear power as an environmentally friendly energy source.

Crisis: America's missing cukes!

Why are these ads significant? 1) They seem to me to be surprisingly effective as a way of spreading dirt. 2) They seem to represent a surprisingly large hole in the campaign finance laws. After all, they are advertisements for a publication. They aren't campaign expenditures. They're simply telling potential customers about an article, which just happens to be an article spreading scandal about the Clintons. In the same way, ads for some Michael Moore films just happen to undermine George Bush. But, unlike Michael Moore films, the enterprise these Google ads are promoting is itself typically exempted from the campaign finance regime under the so-called "media exemption." So why doesn't some unabashedly non-neutral rich person buy up a lot of media properties--and then start spending tens of millions on ads promoting "scoops" that just happen to damage candidates the rich person opposes? Ron Burkle may be on to something.

Buying a home with a new job? Self-cert mortgage needed?

A reader from London is about to buy a new home, but her job is changing so she wants to know if it will affect the mortgage she has lined up. Drawing on years of experience, mortgage adviser Katie Tucker - technical manager at fee-free whole of market mortgage broker charcol.co.uk - takes her through the situation and what it means for her finances. Alice from London asks:: Hello. I am looking into buying a house with my friend. However, I am just about to move from permanent employment to contractual employment with my current employer, and will be changing jobs completely by the end of the year, or even becoming self-employed. If I get a mortgage offer in principle, what may happen if my circumstances are different by the time I apply for a formal agreement? Many thanks. Alice. Katie replies:: Good question Alice, and the lender would ask on the form if anything has materially changed since you got your Agreement in Principle.

snake oil sales folks

The reality is that the internet has taken its place alongside other media, and its growth has certainly coming at the expense of those more established media. But the internet is not going to kill magazines or radio or the local daily newspaper. In so many ways, they are thriving now, despite all the grim talk, and they will continue to thrive alongside the internet even as this sorting out process continues. If anything, the internet serves to enhance what they do well. None of these media is as vulnerable as the doomsters would have us believe.

People still listen to the radio while driving, even if some drive time is spent on the phone. Newspapers are taking a huge hit in ad revenue, for sure, and readership is declining, but they still have huge local impact, and they still show yearly profits in the double digits.

Hume to Conservatives: 'Get Off McCain's Back '

Increase size of the Amry & Marines (Barack said he wants to do that) Appoint judges like Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts (we already know McCain hates Alito) Promise to expell illegal aliens, at the same time you build a fence. Spend more money for the military to buy more CVAs, F-22s, F-35s, C-17s, KC-45s, B-2s, cruise missles, Viginia class submarines, Aegis Cruisers & Destroyers, etc.

That's the bare minimum for him to get my vote as I hold my nose.

I don't expect to be voting for him.

Pledge to not support RINOs ever again!
