The ugly truth in Afghanistan

You can go crow from the rooftops and no one will censor you. The Globe and Mail has the right (and perhaps even the obligation at times) to shut down any debate it so desires. Whether it adequately covers a particular news topic such as Afghanistan is an entirely different matter. My guess, Bert, is that you were entirely happy with the investigative journalism that went on at the time of Adscam, which simply indicates that you are a partisan. There's nothing per se wrong with that, it's just a bit limiting ;-). Posted 01/03/08 at 1:03 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Dutch Comedian Serious About Human Rights in China

A 20-year veteran of Dutch stand-up comedy, television and film, Van Muiswinkel is closely tied to Holland's world of sport. He is best-known for his impersonations of leading sports figures and was himself a member of the National Youth Cricket team and is still active as a cricket coach.

Now he is making a name for himself in the sporting world in a different way.

Van Muiswinkel said he couldn't understand the world's silence while watching the last large totalitarian state proceed with the Olympics, particularly in Holland where people are normally quite vocal in defense of personal freedoms and human rights.

So he decided to put his sure-to-be controversial views in the spotlight to jump-start the debate.

Van Muiswinkel began last December by writing an open letter to Volkskrant, a social democrat paper in Holland popular with intellectuals, under the title "Don't party along with the Games" advocating a boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

Commentary: The Dude Vote

I think that having the president we have now, we need someone who can be well-respected," he says. "We need a change from the polarizing politics from the Republican and Democratic sides. If it's Obama vs. McCain, there wouldn't be bickering. I can't vote for Hillary Clinton knowing full well that my country's time and money will be spent demonizing her."

McCain, on the other hand, is "an older gentleman," "a war hero," "a maverick."

From Obama to McCain is a huge ideological jump, Farahvar realizes.

"I don't agree with McCain on a lot of issues," he acknowledges, "but I don't agree with Obama on a lot of issues. I don't agree with him on health care."

Farahvar has been raising funds for Obama on the Internet. Recently, he went to a party where he took hundreds of dollars in donations from doctors.

'Til debt do you part

As wedding season descends upon those gleefully in love, happy couples ruminate endlessly about color schemes and flower choices.

But there is one topic couples mightily try to avoid: money.

"It's a huge issue," said Mike Allen, marriage and family life minister for the Catholic Diocese in Lexington. "Most statistics show that (disagreement about finance) is one of the prime causes of marital conflict.

"Money in a strange way is a very personal thing," said Allen, who counsels engaged couples as part of his job. "We have a lot of fears related to money."

Because many people are getting married later in life, he said, many of today's couples have the advantage of having some real-world experiences with finances before they get hitched.

Ohio voters blame NAFTA for job loss but skeptical of campaign ...

Kathleen Miller, 49, a health care worker, shakes her head at the changes she has seen as she shops at a huge thrift store.

"When I was growing up, this was a town of 125,000 people. Now it's down to about 80,000."

There is a core group of people in Ohio whose lives have been turned upside down and pro-NAFTA arguments from experts don't make a dent, said Jon Delano, a political science professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

"They won't believe a think-tank when a father, brother or sister has lost their job," Delano said.

"I don't think people have any idea where these jobs went. I think it's amorphous. All they know is that they've disappeared. NAFTA is as easy as anything to blame it on."

"There's never been a requirement to tell the truth in politics."

Clinton and Obama have been criss-crossing the state for two weeks wooing the blue-collar workers who may well decide the nomination race.

Morton Grove man in ID theft case used phone, Internet to obtain ...

A Morton Grove man charged with identity theft spent much of his time on the phone with credit card companies, even disguising his voice as he pretended to be other people, a federal prosecutor said Thursday.

Instead of working, Mohammad Afzal Sodagar, 51, usually was on the phone or the Internet, trying to add to his collection of more than 400 credit cards, often "using a different voice" to disguise his identity, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Christopher McFadden.

Sodagar, a native of Pakistan, is accused of using the credit cards to commit fraud. Although Sodagar had no apparent job, police found $60,000 in cash in his closet when he was arrested Nov. 29, McFadden said. Authorities have not detailed how Sodagar allegedly used the cards for financial gain.

Editorial cartoons from Mike Luckovich.

There should then be a joint international push to get the Iraqis to make the kinds of political deals that will turn the ceasefires into lasting peace. Over the next year if the violence continues to decline, countries like India, Poland and South Africa could be persuaded to relieve American troops. With sustained and focused efforts, over time, American forces could draw down substantially. The mission could then become what it was always billed as, a genuinely international effort to assist the Iraqi people in founding a new nation.}}}}

I can't believe people still take these strokers in the drive by media seriously.

Talk about living in a bubble.

Imagine this as-shole two years from now, "they only won in Iraq cause of what I told them to do."

Jag off.

BCS Championship game: Online ticket buyers risk getting sacked

Only the event, the venue and the event's authorized ticketing company can guarantee that the ticket purchased online is legitimate. You take a risk when buying on the secondary market.

When buying from an individual through an online exchange, don't be lured away from the Web site by the seller. Even if you met the seller on the new Web site, the company may not guarantee any lost money if a transaction occurs outside their domain.

If you buy tickets through an online auction, choose a seller with a long, continuous history of satisfied customers by checking the person's history through the site. Scammers can hijack old accounts, so make sure they have recently bought or sold other items.

Never pay with a cashier's check or wire money to a seller; you'll have no way to get your money back if the tickets do not arrive.
